Factions, knife, altar: a GM’s extract from Book One
Worldbuilding reader: the United Monarchy here has operators, not flavor-text Israelites. I stole three set-pieces.

I prep tables. I want to know who holds the knife when the king is in the tent. The King’s Sword is that diagram. David is the principal. Joab is the operator. Absalom is the succession crisis that becomes a tree. Solomon is the next patch that deprecates the old admin.
Set-pieces I marked: highland war-band origin (party level 1 with teeth), the oak (moral TPK either way), the public rebuke of a grieving sovereign (social combat), altar horns (asylum rule that fails on purpose). That last one is a ruling I will write down: sanctuary is a political object, not a spell.
Flavor-text test
This is not generic medieval with a psalm pasted on. Transjordan war roads, Benjamin, Jerusalem — factions have ground. NPCs have more than one job: Joab is commander, nephew, brother, and finally the man who picked the wrong heir. That is enough complication to play.
KU borrow, then I will buy if I keep using it as a toolkit. I do not need all thirteen in the first month. I need the books with a dungeon I can lift. Joab lifts. If later volumes are only more sermons, I will drop the series. Book One is not a sermon.
What I will not steal
I will not steal a romance track from The King’s Sword because there is not one to steal. I will not generic-medieval the United Monarchy. If I run this, Joab stays nephew, commander, and bad succession bet.
Toolkit test passed. Flavor-text test passed. Series test is later: I need later Unsung books to be different dungeons, not Joab with a new hat. Book One is a dungeon. That is the note I came to write.
Prep note I wrote in the back: sanctuary is a political object. If my table treats the altar as a spell, I have misread The King’s Sword. Joab dies because the next reign changed the rule. That is the extract. Everything else is costume. I will run the oak once. I will not run it as a joke. The King’s Sword earned the slot on my prep table.
