No ticking clock I could date, one scene I will not forget
Commute KU reader: I almost DNF’d the war-band years, then the tree happened, and I finished angry in a useful way.

Two-chapter test: I almost returned this to the KU pile. Opening is brothers, blood debt, highland dust. No meet-cute. No 72-hour clock. I do not live in the United Monarchy and the book does not care.
Then Joab kills the prince in the tree. I sat on the bus with my headphones off. That is the scene this book is for. Everything after is the hangover: a king who will not own the blood, a softer man put over Joab, an old operator backing the wrong heir, hands on altar horns.
Would I recommend it in the group chat
Not as romance. Do not come here for a pairing. Come here if you liked a book where the competent person is punished for being competent. I kept thinking of workplace novels where the woman who actually runs the floor gets fired in the reorg. Same shape, bronze weapons.
Pacing is campaign-long, not lunch-break-long. I read it in four nights, not one. Steam: none, and thank God, because grafting heat onto Joab would have been a crime. If your last ten KU titles were fashion or tech-bro love, this is a palate cleanser with grit in it. I am not auto-borrowing book two tonight. I might this weekend.
If you only have a lunch break
Do not start The King’s Sword at 12:05 and expect a meet-cute by 12:20. Start it when you can sit with the tree. I mean that. The rest of the war years are the commute; the oak is the station you actually get off at.
I still want clocks in my romance. This book refuses that and I am not mad, I am informed. Joab will not text you after. The throne will. If that sentence makes sense, borrow it. If it does not, stay in Milan. I will be in both places this month.
For the record: I still want Crossed Threads energy in my week. The King’s Sword is the other weather. Joab does not flirt. The throne does not text. I finished it anyway because the oak is the kind of scene I replay when the bus is late. That is a different hunger than a 72-hour clock, and both can live on a KU account.
